Khayalethu Protective Work Project is a fully registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO) established under the Non-profit Organizations Act 71 of 1997 and located in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. The Centre is dedicated to empowering youth with severe intellectual impairments and autism through vocational and skills programs.

We offer vital vocational and skills programs, enabling them to lead independent lives and contribute to the economy. Our focus is on maximizing their potential through tailored, supportive learning environments.
About Us
What We DO
We provide specialized vocational and skills programs for youth with severe intellectual impairments and autism. Our offerings include agricultural programs (crop, poultry, mushroom, landscaping), sewing and embroidery, hospitality skills (cookery, housekeeping, event decoration), computer literacy, and various arts and crafts like beadwork, drawing, and pottery. These programs equip our youth with practical skills for future employment and independence.

Our agricultural programs empower youth with severe intellectual impairments and autism through hands-on vocational training. We offer comprehensive skills development in Crop Production, Poultry Production, Mushroom Nursery, Landscaping, and Garden Services, fostering practical expertise and independence for future employment opportunities within the green economy.
About
The Founders
Parents, staff, and stakeholders of Khayalethu Special School came together in response to the challenge of learners leaving the school without a formal plan for continued education or skills development.
Resolved to register an NPO –Khayalethu Protective Work Centre to provide suitable programs for out of school youth with disabilities i.e. Intellectual challenged , Autism etc.
KPWP is made of 7 Board of Directors and a Centre Manager Mrs. N Yawa Tini

Program Title: Voices of Ability – Disability Advocacy Program
Purpose
The Disability Advocacy Program is a strategic initiative aimed at promoting the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of persons with disabilities, with a special focus on youth and young adults with severe intellectual, physical, and developmental disabilities. The program builds awareness, strengthens support systems, and ensures that persons with disabilities are represented in decision-making processes at community and municipal levels.
Anchored by models like the Khayalethu Protective Work Project, this program seeks to bridge the gap between policy and practice by amplifying lived experiences and showcasing what true inclusion looks like in action.

Objectives
To raise awareness about the rights and potential of persons with disabilities. To equip youth with disabilities and their families with knowledge and advocacy skills. To influence policy and planning processes at municipal level through dialogue and representation.
To promote inclusive education, skills development, and protected employment models. To combat stigma and discrimination through community-based storytelling and education.
Key Activities
Disability Rights Workshops for youth, parents, educators, and service providers. Community Dialogues in partnership with municipalities and stakeholders. Training in Self-Advocacy for young people with disabilities.
Showcasing inclusive models, such as Khayalethu, in forums and public engagements. Monitoring local service delivery for accessibility and inclusion. Hosting an Annual Disability Advocacy Week with exhibitions, performances, and policy dialogues.
